Chitra chitra

Striped Giant Narrow Headed Soft Shell turtle

These magnificient turtles are the largest of all freshwater turtles, they are also the heaviest of  all freshwater turtles. An adult can grow and weigh up to 150 to 250 kilos. These turtles are extremely rare in the wild and hatchlings or even midsize Chitra chitra are almost impossible to be found in the wild not to mention full grown adults. We have the fortunate chance to be the 1st successful Chitra chitra breeders around breaking a record of 1000 ++ hatchlings for the year 2001 alone. Our advant garde style of incubating the eggs have proven very successful.

Chitra chitra defers from its closest cousin from Pakistan ,the Chitra indica. To date there have not  been any confirmation of any captive bred Chitra indica from any source. These turtles are on the brink of extinction and if wildcaught population of Chitra indicas go unchecked,it will one day become extinct in the wild like the Chitra chitra  that we are now breeding.

It is always advisable to buy captive bred turtles as wildcaught animals almost always produces much problems.Wild caughts suffers from appetite destruction and most will die under stress and suffer from parasites etc.Captive breds on the other hand are more expensive but the overall statistics for survival is very much higher.
